In short: ghassoul (also called rhassoul) is a mineral clay from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. Mixed with a little water, it turns into a creamy paste that absorbs excess oil and impurities. You can use it on your face, body, hair and scalp, 1–2 times a week.

What Ghassoul clay is

Ghassoul is a clay mined in the Atlas Mountains. The name comes from the Arabic "ghassala", meaning "to wash". In the Moroccan hammam it's used after exfoliation, on skin and hair, for cleansing.

It's sold as a powder. With a little water, it turns into a fine, creamy paste.

Which skin type it suits

Ghassoul is especially good for skin that gets congested quickly, a shiny T-zone and a scalp with excess oil. If your skin is dry, use it less often and moisturize well afterwards.

Skin type How often How long to leave it on
Oily, combination 1–2 times a week 10 minutes
Normal Once a week 5–10 minutes
Dry, sensitive Once every 2 weeks 5 minutes

How to use it on your face and body

  1. Make the paste. A tablespoon of powder and a little lukewarm water, in a bowl (not metal). Mix until creamy.
  2. Apply it to clean, damp skin. In a thin layer, avoiding the eye area.
  3. Leave it on for 5–10 minutes. Don't let it dry out completely and crack.
  4. Rinse with lukewarm water. Massaging gently, in circles.
  5. Moisturize. A few drops of argan oil on still-damp skin.

How to use it on your hair and scalp

Make a runnier paste, apply it to your wet scalp and roots, massage gently and leave it on for 5–10 minutes. Rinse very well. Then use your usual conditioner on the lengths, because the clay can dry out the ends.

Where ghassoul fits in the hammam ritual

In the Moroccan hammam, the order is: steam, Beldi black soap, exfoliation with the kessa glove, then ghassoul on skin and hair and, finally, argan oil.

Frequently asked questions

Are ghassoul and rhassoul the same thing?

Yes. They're two ways of spelling the name of the same Moroccan clay.

Can I use Ghassoul clay every day?

It's not recommended. 1–2 times a week is enough, otherwise your skin may get dry.

Why shouldn't it dry on my face?

When it dries completely, the clay draws moisture from your skin and can leave it dry and tight. Rinse it off while it's still slightly damp.

Is ghassoul good for an oily scalp?

Yes, it absorbs excess oil from the scalp. Use conditioner on the lengths afterwards.
