In short: hairs grow under the skin when a cut or broken hair can't reach the surface, usually because of dead skin or shaving too close. Exfoliate a day or two before shaving or hair removal, never on the same day, and start again 2–3 days after. In between, moisturize your skin and shave in the direction of hair growth.

Why hairs grow under the skin

After shaving, the hair is left cut straight and sharp. After waxing, the new hair grows back finer. In both cases, if there's a layer of dead skin on the surface, the hair can't get out and curls back into the skin. You get a dark spot or a small red bump.

It happens more often with thick or curly hair, on the legs, bikini area and underarms.

The exfoliation schedule

When Shaving Waxing or IPL
1–2 days before Exfoliate with the glove, on softened skin Exfoliate with the glove, on softened skin
Hair removal day No exfoliation. Shave at the end of your shower, then apply oil No exfoliation. Just moisturize afterwards
First 2–3 days after Just moisturize, wear loose clothes Just moisturize, avoid high heat
After that One exfoliation a week One exfoliation a week

If you use IPL or laser, follow the device's or the clinic's instructions first.

How to shave for fewer ingrown hairs

  1. Shave at the end of your shower, when your skin and hair are softened.
  2. Use a sharp blade. Change it when you feel it pulling.
  3. Shave in the direction of hair growth on areas where you often get ingrown hairs.
  4. Don't stretch your skin and don't go over the same spot several times.
  5. Moisturize afterwards, with a few drops of argan oil on damp skin.

Multi-blade razors lift the hair and cut it slightly below skin level. A single-blade razor cuts at skin level, which is why people who get ingrown hairs often choose it. It's the one in The Shave Ritual, together with Beldi soap, the glove and argan oil.

What not to do

  • Don't pull hairs out with tweezers or a needle. You can hurt your skin and leave marks.
  • Don't exfoliate on the same day as hair removal. Your skin is already irritated.
  • Don't exfoliate every day. Too much rubbing irritates the skin and can cause more bumps.
  • Don't wear tight clothes right after shaving.

Frequently asked questions

Do I exfoliate before or after hair removal?

Before, a day or two ahead. After hair removal, wait 2–3 days until your skin is no longer irritated, then go back to one exfoliation a week.

Can I exfoliate on the same day as shaving?

It's not recommended. Shaving already removes a thin layer of skin, and exfoliating on the same day irritates it.

Does exfoliation help with ingrown hairs?

Regular exfoliation removes dead skin, so the hair reaches the surface more easily. Many customers notice fewer ingrown hairs after a few weeks.

What do I do if an ingrown hair gets inflamed?

Don't squeeze it and don't exfoliate the area. If it hurts, fills with pus or doesn't go away, see a doctor. You'll find more about inflamed bumps in our article on folliculitis after shaving.

Which razor is best for ingrown hairs?

Many people prefer a single-blade razor, because it cuts the hair at skin level, not below it. It also matters that the blade is sharp and that you shave in the direction of hair growth.
