In short: for your body, the most visible exfoliation comes from a kessa-style glove, used on softened skin. For your face, choose a much finer silk glove. A sponge and a loofah are good for washing, not for deep exfoliation, and a dry brush is more of a massage. For your back, where you can't reach, a band with handles is more practical.

Types of gloves and tools, in short

How it exfoliates What it's for How often
Kessa glove Rubbing on softened skin; lifts dead skin in rolls Body: legs, arms, belly, back Once a week
Silk glove Very gentle rubbing Face and sensitive areas 1–2 times a week
Sponge or loofah Washes and lightly exfoliates, with shower gel Daily washing Daily, if dried well
Dry brush Brushing on dry skin Massage, an energized skin feeling A few times a week, gently
Scrub with particles Sugar, salt or kernel particles in oil Light exfoliation and hydration 1–2 times a week
Back band Like the glove, but with handles Your back, where your hand can't reach Once a week

The kessa glove

It's the glove from the Moroccan hammam, with a rough weave and no grains. It only works on skin that has spent 10–15 minutes in warm water: that's when the layer of dead skin softens and the glove lifts it. On dry skin it does nothing but irritate.

It's the right choice if you have rough skin, ingrown hairs or want a visible exfoliation once a week. The exact steps are in our kessa glove guide.

"When I saw the glove I was a little skeptical: what can a viscose glove do better than a loofah? Well, it can!"

"I've bought lots of exfoliating gloves over the years, but none of them worked like this one."

The silk glove, for your face

The skin on your face is thinner and can't handle a body glove. The silk glove has a fine texture and gently removes dead skin cells, without irritation. Use it on a damp face, with light circular movements. You'll find it here: facial exfoliating glove.

The sponge and the loofah

They're good for daily washing with shower gel and give a light exfoliation. They don't lift the layer of dead skin the way a kessa does. They need to dry completely between uses and should be replaced often, because they stay damp for a long time.

The dry brush

You use it on dry skin, before showering, with long strokes toward the heart. It's pleasant as a massage, but the exfoliation is surface-level. On sensitive skin or skin with bumps it can irritate, so press lightly.

The scrub

A scrub has particles mixed with oil. The oil leaves skin soft, but makes the particles slide, so the exfoliation is weaker. It's a good option between two glove exfoliations or for very dry skin.

What to check when you choose a kessa glove

  • The texture stays rough when wet. Some gloves go completely soft in water and no longer grip the skin.
  • The size. Your whole hand should fit, so you can press evenly. Ours is 14 × 22 cm.
  • It dries quickly. A glove that stays damp for days holds bacteria.
  • It comes with clear instructions. How you use it makes almost all the difference.

Whatever the glove, it's a personal hygiene item. We recommend replacing it every 3 months.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best exfoliating glove for the body?

For visible exfoliation, a kessa-style glove, used on softened skin once a week. A sponge and a loofah are better suited for daily washing.

Can I use the body glove on my face?

No. It's too rough for facial skin. For your face, choose a much finer silk glove.

Glove or dry brush?

The kessa glove exfoliates more deeply, on softened skin. A dry brush is more of a surface massage. You can use both, but not on the same day.

Exfoliating glove or scrub?

The glove exfoliates more strongly, because there's no oil to make it slide. A scrub is gentler and moisturizes. Many people alternate them.

How do I exfoliate my back on my own?

With an exfoliating band with handles, which you pull diagonally across your back. See the exfoliating back band.
